QNAP High Availability Tested: Sub-Minute Failover on a Pair of TS-h765eU

September 2, 2026
High availability (HA) is no longer a data center luxury but a core component of standard IT resiliency planning. Small businesses and edge sites rely on NAS for POS systems, surveillance, and shared storage, where downtime incurs direct financial losses. Traditional dual-controller enterprise arrays are oversized and overpriced for branch and edge deployments, leaving most small IT environments with only snapshots and backups for data protection, with no true business continuity—single-controller NAS hardware remains a critical single point of failure.

QNAP has long offered dual-controller hardware and replication recovery tools, but QuTS hero h6.0’s new High Availability Manager delivers a more efficient, cost-effective HA model. The software enables two identical commodity NAS units to form an active-passive cluster under a single shared IP, enabling seamless failover with minimal client disruption. This allows organizations to implement enterprise-grade HA at the cost of a second standard NAS, eliminating the need for expensive specialized infrastructure.

To validate real-world performance, we built a two-node HA cluster using dual QNAP TS-h765eU devices, configured with Seagate IronWolf Pro HDDs for capacity and QNAP E1.S SSDs for caching. We simulated common edge-site failures: active-node power loss and isolated client network outages with heartbeat links intact, testing file transfer survivability and post-failure recovery behavior.

QNAP TS-h765eU Hardware Overview

The TS-h765eU is optimized for edge and small-branch HA deployments, featuring a compact 1U short-depth rackmount chassis (292.1mm deep) that fits wall-mounted racks and compact media cabinets unsuitable for full-depth servers. It balances high-capacity spinning storage and low-latency flash caching via four front-facing 3.5-inch SATA bays and three rear E1.S/M.2 PCIe NVMe slots. QNAP guarantees long-term hardware availability through 2031, ideal for standardized multi-site edge deployments.

Our test cluster configuration deployed four 30TB Seagate IronWolf Pro HDDs in RAID 5 per node for primary storage, paired with two 3.84TB QNAP SSD700 E1.S SSDs in RAID 0 for caching. Both nodes ran QuTS hero h6.0.0.3500 and HA Manager 2.0.421.

QuTS hero h6.0 HA Manager Architecture

HA Manager adopts a standard active-passive cluster design. The active node handles all data services, while the passive node synchronizes block-level data continuously via a dedicated direct heartbeat link and stands by for failover. The cluster exposes a single unified IP and hostname to clients, eliminating the need to reconfigure drives, iSCSI initiators, or backup jobs during node switchover.

The dedicated server-to-server heartbeat connection manages health checks and real-time data sync, isolated from client-facing network traffic. A network-based quorum server acts as a third-party witness to prevent split-brain scenarios, arbitrating node promotion when heartbeat connectivity is lost. QNAP reports over 90% of NAS services support HA operation, with JBOD expansion available for capacity scaling.

Key limitations include a lack of immutable snapshot support within HA clusters (forcing admins to choose between HA and immutable snapshot protection) and a requirement for fully identical node hardware and firmware for cluster pairing.

HA Cluster Deployment

Cluster setup uses a streamlined wizard workflow for two standalone, identically configured TS-h765eU units. Admins assign dedicated interfaces for heartbeat sync and client cluster traffic, then define a unified cluster hostname and IP. The five-step automated cluster build completes in approximately 5.5 minutes, with full cluster provisioning finished in under ten minutes.

The subsequent initial block-level data sync between active and passive nodes took roughly ten minutes, with sustained heartbeat transfer speeds of 900MB/s–1.2GB/s and microsecond-scale latency. The dashboard displays real-time sync progress, status estimates, and lockout notifications for switchover and firmware updates during synchronization. Upon completion, the dashboard provides a consolidated health view of node status, resource utilization, and data sync state.

Failover Test 1: Active Node Power Loss

We initiated a sustained 41.1GB multi-file SMB transfer to the cluster IP before cutting power to the active node. The client transfer stalled for approximately 50 seconds during failover to the passive node, with no file errors or session drops. Post-failover, the cluster operated normally on the surviving node at full speed.

Power restoration triggered automatic resync and failback. The restored node re-joined as a passive member in ten minutes, synchronizing lost data without disrupting the ongoing file transfer. Final failback induced a 35-second pause before the active role reverted, completing the full recovery cycle with 100% successful file transfer and restored cluster health.

Failover Test 2: Client Network Outage (Intact Heartbeat)

We simulated a common real-world fault by disconnecting the active node’s client-facing network while preserving the direct heartbeat link. The file transfer paused for 45 seconds during node switchover and resumed seamlessly. The HA dashboard delivered precise diagnostics, identifying the exact faulty interface and confirming quorum server connectivity loss, offering far more granular insight than generic system alerts.

Network restoration triggered automatic failback with a 30-second client-side pause. The single SMB transfer survived two consecutive full cluster switchovers with zero file failures or session interruptions, validating robust real-world resiliency.

Split-Brain Prevention & Best-Practice Topology

Split-brain scenarios—where two healthy nodes lose inter-communication and claim active status independently—cause data inconsistency and corruption. This risk stems from shared network infrastructure failures, not individual node faults, and is mitigated via three core deployment rules.

First, deploy a direct cable heartbeat connection between nodes to eliminate intermediate switches or shared infrastructure as failure points. Second, physically separate heartbeat and client cluster network paths to avoid single-switch outages causing total inter-node isolation. Third, enable the quorum server witness for independent node status arbitration and tiebreaking during connectivity loss.

QuTS hero includes defensive split-brain recovery tools. Post-outage, the system halts core services to prevent conflicting writes and offers two recovery modes: restore from a single valid node (fast resync) or preserve both datasets for manual reconciliation before cluster rejoin. While recoverable, split-brain events are best avoided via proper topology design.

Monitoring & Operational Usability

HA Manager provides a unified single-pane dashboard for cluster health, resource metrics, event logs, and manual switchover controls with precise fault diagnostics. Local NAS hardware enhances on-site visibility via LCD cluster status displays and role-specific LED indicators (green solid/ blink/ red fault). For multi-site fleets, AMIZcloud delivers centralized cloud monitoring for HA cluster health, latency tracking, and unified alerting.

Conclusion

QNAP’s HA Manager successfully delivers enterprise-grade continuity for edge and SMB environments, surviving hard power failures and network outages with only sub-minute client-side pauses and zero file loss. Cluster deployment is fast and user-friendly, with transparent sync progress and granular fault diagnostics that simplify day-to-day management.

The solution has clear tradeoffs: dual-node hardware increases total cost, passive capacity sits idle during normal operation, HA clusters exclude immutable snapshot functionality, and hardware upgrades require paired replacements. Even so, it delivers superior resiliency compared to traditional backups and manual replication, which suffer lengthy recovery times and manual client reconfiguration.

Proper topology design (direct heartbeat links, isolated network paths, quorum server enablement) eliminates the only critical failure mode—split-brain. During vulnerable post-failover resync cycles, enterprise-grade NAS drives like the deployed Seagate IronWolf Pro ensure stable, consistent performance. Tailored for edge and small-branch HA use cases, the TS-h765eU and QuTS hero h6.0 provide right-sized, cost-effective business continuity for environments underserved by expensive enterprise dual-controller arrays.
